The Hatfield-McCoy feud still rages

We’ve heard about the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and the Jobs Report being the two most important considerations for interest rate momentum as far as economic reports are concerned.  Last week we said “Hello” to the Producer Price Index (PPI), which focuses on the more volatile wholesale side of the supply chain.  As PPI has been looked at as being not as important, mainly due to it surging sharply lower in late 2023 and helping to build a case for inflation calming down, PPI has reared its head again, spiking a few times in the past few months and last week was the latest example.

Adding insult to the injury already done by CPI earlier last week, this created further upward movement in mortgage interest rates, taking them to their highest levels in over two months.  Short story, more waiting, as opposed to less, to see when the Fed will give its first signal that a rate cut could be on the table.  We’re still on the road to recovery…

[As always, thanks to Martin Rosenblum at Mortif Mortgage for his helpful insight!]

For the second year in a row, we are well-above the yearly average rainfall for the Ojai valley (which is about 21.50 inches, depending on where you get your information).  The ground at my house was so saturated that my own weather station toppled over, rending the measurements unreliable.

Related to the rain – my dogs don’t enjoy going out in the rain, though they tolerate it more than past dogs I’ve owned.  I once had a dog that went over 24 hours without going to the bathroom (and didn’t relieve themselves in the house as a consequence)!  However, I’m convinced my current dogs tolerate the rain because the payoff – getting aggressively towel dried afterwards – is well worth it.   They wag their tails through the entire process!

Santa Ana Creek leading into Lake Casitas, covering service road

According to my rainfall data, Lake Casitas is at its highest point in at least 10 years (since my data doesn’t go back further than than), but it may be more like 13 years.  The highest point it reached last year was 74.0% on 6/20/23, and we’re at 75.8% now.  Based on the flow I saw this morning into Lake Casitas from the diversion canal, as well as the Santa Ana Creek, I’d say we’ll see close to 80% lake capacity within the next few days.

We received almost 3 inches of rain last night, with another 8 inches or so predicted from today through next Friday.  If you can, take the break in the rain today and tomorrow to double-check your roof and gutters.  I always clean my gutters out prior to the rainy season, but you should also check for debris dams.  These are buildups that usually occur in the valleys of the roofs, and consist of leaves and dirt.  If you have a tile roof like mine, this could allow the water to build up and flow sideways and even upward – underneath the tiles.

A little tip for you:  There are several companies that make leaf blower attachments that allow you to clean the gutters without having to climb on the roof.  I use this regularly.  Another hint – wear a long-sleeve, hooded sweatshirt or something similar while using this tool – I guarantee you will get covered in dirt and leaves!
