Due to the fact that we’ve been somewhat cooped up over the last several months, Cheryl and I have started to get into something I thought I would never be interested in – puzzling. Over the last month and a half we’ve pieced together 5 puzzles, starting with the 500 piece variety and moving up to (and currently on) 750. I’m guessing 1,000 is next.
Here are a few things I’m discovering about doing puzzles, that I’m sure puzzle aficionados will agree are true:
~ We always start out with the edge/perimeter pieces. The first puzzle we did, we missed one edge piece during the initial search through all the pieces. I assumed we would get better at this as we went along. Wrong. We’ve gotten progressively worse. The current puzzle we’re on? Six missing edge pieces to begin the puzzle I will consider it a major victory if and when we ever get all the edge pieces the first time through. I might even walk away and declare the puzzle as “finished.”
~ The underside of my forearms act like puzzle-piece magnets.
~ “Savanting” a piece is when you see a random piece in the pile and immediately place it where it belongs. (Thanks to Linda for coming up with the term.)
~ When you locate a hard-to-find piece and place it, you always tap it in extra-hard – that way, everyone else at the table knows about it.
~ If you accidentally knock a piece off the table and onto the tile floor, everyone at the table will tell you what you just did.
~ Once completed, you need to leave the puzzle in place for a minimum of 24 hours so that you can go back and admire your work, at least for one day.
~ Finally, while we have no remorse about breaking up a completed puzzle and placing it back in the box, doing so always reminds me of…

We just received a nice review from clients who recently closed on a home last month. Short story: After the closing, the new owners found a couple of old contractor’s lockboxes on the property and asked if we could help. Since we were unable to locate the numeric codes for these boxes, I brought over the trusty bolt-cutters and removed both the boxes. As we left the property and crossed the street to our car, I stepped into a pothole and slightly twisted my ankle – not a big deal. However, the rest of my body went flying and I landed awkwardly on my hand/wrist, hyper-extending all my fingers and wrist in the process (all while Cheryl watched in slow motion as the heavy bolt-cutters arced through the air and landed, just missing my head). My first comment to Cheryl after I picked myself up off the ground was, “I’ll bet that looked hilariously like slapstick.” Turns out, I was right.
I’m glad to report that after 5 weeks, the wrist is back to normal. Our clients were wonderful people to deal with, however, the bolt-cutter incident is probably what I will always remember about this sale! I only wish I’d caught it on video.

Yesterday, we met with a new potential client. While we stood outside in the yard talking about the property, the owner took down his mask for a moment (we left ours on) – and both Cheryl and I were immediately surprised by the face we saw underneath. You see, it was the first time we had actually seen our client’s face, and unbeknownst to either Cheryl or myself, our brains had subconsciously constructed an image of what the owner looked like under that mask – even though we had previously only seen his eyes and the top of his head. So when that image was different than what our imaginations had concocted, we were surprised by the difference between our expectations and reality. We both commented on it as soon as we got in our car to leave.
Point is, I found it quite interesting that the human brain wants to automatically fill in these image gaps (without our conscious knowledge or consent) and it made me wonder – how often is it that our brains do this? I would imagine it’s more often than we realize. I would also imagine that as a result of constructing complete pictures from partial images – our brains make a lot of false conclusions about people and the world around us.
In these mask-sporting times, I’m so relieved to not be single and dating…

On a completely unrelated-to-real-estate note; I was recently watching the classic 1960 movie, “The Time Machine.” This is one of the first movies I recall watching with my parents when I was young. I know it’s one of my father’s favorites, and it’s on my list as well. But during this recent viewing I noted that it has the most hilariously over-dramatic music in seemingly the wrong places (see 50 minutes, 30 seconds into the movie for an example). Still, I love the movie. I also noted the film score sounds a lot like Khachaturian’s Symphony No. 3 (it’s even in the same key). Not to impugn Russell Garcia’s work on the movie score, but Khachaturian’s symphony came out 13 years earlier, in 1947. Just sayin’. To me, the piece is equivalent to classical heavy metal, especially with the monstrous pipe organ sound – it’s worth a listen! And that is about as far away from real estate jabber as one can get. (WEENA!!!!)
