Changes to the All Listings page:

As you may recall, the Ventura MLS switched over to a new system on December 12th.  One of the drawbacks to this new system is that the links to listed properties now expire every 30 days (the Ojai MLS links last indefinitely).  We just discovered this issue yesterday.  It’ll require extra work to keep on top of the expired links from the Ventura MLS, but we’re happy to do that for you.  However, this will cause some changes to the site.

Since the blog archives go back six months, some of the older Ventura MLS links will no longer work.  Once a property has been sold, expired, cancelled or withdrawn (in other words, the listing is no longer active), it will fall off the Ventura system.  If you click a link to one of these, you’ll either see a blank page with the writing on the top left, “This is not a valid link” -OR- you’ll see a page with the verbiage, “The listing or listings are no longer available…”  Unfortunately, there’s no way for us to re-link these once they’ve been purged from the Ventura MLS.

The good news is that most of the links are from the Ojai MLS, which aren’t affected in this manner.  Also, this shouldn’t really affect your day-to-day use of the site.  Unless you’re consistently going back several months to look at listings that are no longer relevant, this shouldn’t be much of an issue.  Besides, who are we kidding?  We all know the real reason the archives exist is so you can scroll through the Pics of the Day.

We may try to find another workaround for this issue, but for the time being – it is what it is.  It’s going to take us a couple of days to comb through the site to find all of the aforementioned links.  Thank you for understanding!

Many years ago I played on a softball team with a guy named Bobby Gaitens.  He was the manager of the team, so every week he would call each player to make sure they would be at the game, ready to play.  Having been a team manager myself I told him he didn’t need to call me each week, as I would never miss a game without calling him first.  But Bobby asked if I didn’t mind if he called each week anyway; it made him feel better knowing which players would be there.  It was a bit of an annoyance to get his call each week, but I relented and relaxed about it.

Most of the time when he called my cell phone I wasn’t available to pick up, so he would leave a message.  This meant that I, in turn, would have to leave a message on his phone in response.  Still sounds annoying, right?  But here’s the thing:  Every day, Bobby would change his outgoing message to include “On this day in history…”  I always loved that (as did Cheryl, who would ask me to play his outgoing message aloud for her).  So, I am incorporating Bobby’s idea here; there will now be a “This Day in History” fact near the top of the page, along with the Quote of the Day and the weather forecast.

Bobby and I no longer keep in touch, but embedded in my memory is the sound of his disappointment when he’d swing at a pitch and hit it poorly, yelling loudly “….aaaawwwwwww!” as he was running out of the batter’s box to first base – loud enough for both teams to hear.  We’d all break up laughing in the dugout every time he did it; he just couldn’t help himself, he’d say. Good times.

– Got rain?  Here’s a photo taken yesterday from the Baldwin Road bridge (courtesy of the Ojai Valley News).  This is on our side of town; we haven’t seen the river this full in five years!

I found a great resource for learning about Ojai’s rainfall history at http://venturawatershed.org/drought-rainfall-information.  What I found most interesting is that our yearly rainfall average is based on a wide swing of high and low rainfall totals from year-to-year.  About a year ago or so I found and posted information about Lake Casitas that showed that it took almost 20 years for the lake to fill up after it and the dam were first constructed.  Point is, the lake’s natural state isn’t for it to be “full.”  There will always be periods of extreme highs/lows.  I found the following statement in the link above:  “The Ventura River watershed has long experienced cycles of wetter years and drier years. The storage capacity of Lake Casitas was designed by the Bureau of Reclamation based upon the longest dry period on record, the years 1944/45 to ’65.”

Anyway, it’s a good read with insightful info and interesting graphs!
